This period of flooring lasts from between the earliest flooring in America up until the 1830’s. What makes it unique is that it was all cut with hand tools. The fasteners were usually wrought iron nails hand made by English blacksmiths. And the flooring would have normally fall under these specifications:
◦1”-1 1/4” thick
◦Cut from old growth heart pine
◦4.5” - 8” vertical grain select grade
◦Gauged planed and undercut
◦Jack planed face
◦Average cost to reproduce in solid: $38-42 per square foot.
Our 5” and 7” x 3/4” 6.2 mil vertical grain flooring is a prefect alternative. It is easy to install and does not require a full trowel glue down, nor does it have a thin wear layer like most retail flooring.
This period of flooring begins in the 1830’s and lasts until the 1870’s. Steam powered circular mills begin changing the way logs are cut. What makes them different from period one flooring is that the circular marks are typically seen on the back sides of the boards. During this time, cut nails will be used and the flooring will sometimes be face nailed and 9”-18”. You will find flooring graded and cut to the same spec as period one. The wider widths with include cathedral shaped grain and not pin striped as showned in vertical grain.

◦Formal spaces will look similar to period one in plantation homes

Our 9” and 11” heart pine will match the wide plank flooring which is common during this period in most farm houses. This material should be full trowel glued with Wokol adhesive on any substrate.
This period of flooring is the first heart pine flooring which is cut on a planer.
From from the 1870’s until the 1920’s the materials are very clean and consistent.
It all is cut more narrow, in much higher volume, and is ordinarily set aside for upper floors and kitchen spaces.

Our vertical grain flooring in solid is a perfect match in 2.5”-3 1/4”. 3.5” vertical grain is available in solid and engineered and is about half the cost in engineered format. It is incredibly fast and easy to use. We offer an incredible product for this and it will match most houses in the south.
